A diverse group of organizations and agencies met in Argentia on July 7 to discuss developing a park to be a memorial to the Americans who were association with the Argentia Military Base. It will also celebrate over fifty years of history and a friendship between the visitors and local people. Represented at the meeting were: Town of Placentia, Argentia Port (former AMA), Placentia Area Development Association, Festival of Flags, Placentia Area Historical Society, Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, and Parks Canada,
The goup first visited Gun Battery 282 where there is a bunker and two large six inch guns. , two of only six in the world. This is the location where any park is likely to be located. After viewing the area the group retired to the Port of Argentia building where they discussed many possibilities. There was obvious interest in the group and most were willing to commit to helping see a park developed. It was generally felt the way to start was to intrepret what is there now and make some improvement to make it more attractive to visitors. This could including putting up stroyboards sabout Argentia base and to tell the history. It would proberly be necessary to hook up electricity to the bunker to make it useful. . However the first step is to get the visions of all participants for the area and then get a consultant to put it into a useable plan. A major task will be to find funds to make all of this happen. The group agreed to meet again in September to continue the actions.
